Important Notice to All Travelers

"Are You Sometimes Confused When Reading Hotel Reviews?"
(Especially if
you visit several review sites)
Confused because:
* One reviewer RAVES about a
property but the next one HATES it!
* An
equal number of reviews give a hotel/motel a '4' and a '2' and the
average is, well...average.
* A
review says a property is dirty and noisy and another says it is
clean, comfortable and quiet..
These discrepancies occur because different people have different
agendas. Many reviewers are mad about things that have NOTHING to do
with the property itself, but they take out their frustration on it
because it is an easy target. This does YOU, the naive traveler, a
great disservice. Which is why you need to learn to 'read between
the lines' and try to see beyond the fluff and get to the real
story! You can learn to do this by reading my e-book Hotel Reviews:
Finding and Understanding.

Do You Use Reviews
Only to Decide Which Hotels to Stay In?
Reviews offer SO MUCH
more than just what people experienced.
-
Find attractions
like Theme Parks or Sports venues, Museums or walking paths
-
Learn about hidden
'gems' like great restaurants, nearby stores, libraries,
churches
-
Get public
transportation tips and discover easier ways to get around and
save on cab fares
I offer tips
that will save you much heartache in addition to saving time and money.
My e-book will show you how to look for hidden agendas from
reviewers, which reviews to ignore and which to pay close
attention to, how many reviews you need to make a common sense
evaluation of the property you are looking for and why lower
average scores may lead you to a better property than high rated
properties. I offer valuable tips
that infrequent travelers have never thought of. Read or listen
for yourself and see - if you don't agree, I'll refund 100% of
your money.

From the Preface:
"What a
difference the internet has made. Now you can read pros and cons of
hotels in the area you are going to and make more realistic choices.
Or you can choose a hotel with plusses that suits your needs better.
I once booked a motel that had a ‘pool’ so my daughter and her
friends could hang out in the sun but the pool was about the size of
three hot tubs and totally useless. Reviews pointing this out would
have made ALL the difference to me booking there."
From Chapter One
"Reviews
where the guest admits that his/her flight was canceled (meaning
they perhaps MISSED the flight in reality) and they had to book
‘unexpectedly’ in a hotel are a tip off that he/she
was unhappy before they ever arrived. Undoubtedly, he/she will
complain about most everything thereafter – the shuttle took 40
minutes, the desk clerk was rude, the room was small and ‘dirty’,
the neighbors were noisy, breakfast was skimpy – the list goes on
and on. I have seen
guests complain that they HAD to take a smoking room because it was
all that was left when booking at the last minute. Had to? Who put
the gun to their head and said you MUST stay at this property? Or
because they found out the area was sold out and now they had to pay
$149.00 when they were expecting to be on a plane. So they trash the
hotel about issues that nine others praise it for – like cleanliness
or friendly staff. These types of reviews I generally discard."
From
Chapter Two
"My
advice is to also use the Third Party sites for their reviews.
Expedia and Hotels.com is easy to find and use. I find Expedia
perhaps the best of all, mainly because it has the most reviews. And
quantity of reviews is what you are looking for. If you use the old
style school grading technique of throwing out the two or three best
and worst, you get a pretty fair assessment of a property by what is
left. This is not easy to do when there are only five reviews
available. Travelocity and Orbitz are useful too, but mostly when
used as added assessments and not when used as the sole review
source."
From Chapter Three
"Why
I point these out is that you need to understand the mind-set of
posters in order to interpret their ratings. It is fairly easy to
interpret their comments, but oftentimes some people feel only a
Marriott or Hyatt should ever get a 9 or a 10. Therefore they think
they are giving a high compliment to a Howard Johnson’s or a
Budget Inn by giving it a 7 or 8. In fact, a three out of five may
seem a credible and passing score to the reviewer but in the cut
throat world of reviews where a bunch of threes drags DOWN a
properties appeal, they are feared by hotels. Three out of five is
barely above average, so if part of your stay was fine but part a
disaster, this rating would be appropriate. But if you LOVE the
place and everything was great but you only rated it a four, you are
not helping others
find a great hotel.
From Chapter Four
" What
I am attempting to show is that with only a few minutes search, you
can find valuable information from Third Party sites, just by
looking at the hotel/motel details option as well as the description
of the property on the main page.
So
if you are attending a baseball game in Cincinnati and have never
been there, you could pretty easily discover either what hotels are
near the ballpark or what transit lines run near the
park. This allows you to stay further away (for probably less cost)
but not have to spend 2 hours transferring from bus to bus."
Who am I and why
should you listen to me?

I am David C. Reynolds...
...
I started in the hotel business in 1972, while I was
attending Hotel and Restaurant school at City
College of San Francisco. I currently work at an
airport hotel in San Francisco and have worked in
the industry before and after the Internet became a
business standard. I see people daily who cost
themselves money, either because they are unprepared
for travel or they use a flawed strategy for
reserving their rooms. Such as using Third Party
sites like Travelocity to book all their travel or
always using just one 'special' Third Party site.
Some do not have reservations and find out the hotel
is sold out AFTER they got on 'any shuttle' and got
off at our hotel. I have to send them off in the
dark over a mile to the nearest hotel - all because
they didn't call ahead. Many guests book real early
and are irritated when they find out rates have been
lowered in the interim but they cannot get the lower
rate. I decided to write a book offering meaningful
advice on how to handle such situations as well as
tips for travel in general.
You can start saving on your very next
booking and for years to come.

"David--This was very informative. You gave some
great tips but most importantly you emphasized
self reliance by being proactive instead of
reactive."

Reviews are the first step in the process to internet research of
your trip. But you can spend HOURS reading reviews, wandering from
site to site and clicking on links going nowhere instead of using my
quick evaluation method on only one site to find out all you need to
know. If my book
does not offer
more value than what it cost you to purchase it, I'll cheerfully
REFUND YOUR MONEY!
Do
You Know Which Review Sites Are Good and Which Are Useless?
There are important
factors that make some sites worth reading.
Such as:
Sites that have
a sample variety worth exploring.
Sites that are not
weighted down by pre-determining factors like those coming from
discount booking sites.
Sites with good comments and tips sections..
Sites that allow for management responses.
My book
will show you how some sites are
possibly
COSTING YOU MONEY
and valuable TIME.
Did You Know
Most People Use Reviews Only to Confirm Their Choice?
More important is
using reviews to pick a great hotel:
-
Where to look for a cheaper hotel room if your
budget restricts you from a
more upscale property.
-
Often the location or nearby
attractions are more important than price or amenities offered.
-
I'll show you
why a simple 'traveler tip' may be more important to you in the
end than a low priced motel.
-
I'll show you
how to research hotels using reviews in a quick and easy way
that precludes spending hours on the net..

Typical Scenarios
A traveler finds a budget motel
for $60/night that seems to meet their basic needs.
Appearance isn't important, neither are amenities like a
gym or sauna. He/she plan on fast food for dinner and
saving more dollars and hitting the continental
breakfast after an early rise for a morning flight.
They'll settle for dirty carpets, mold in the bathroom,
a lumpy mattress, grungy sheets and an inferior
heater/AC unit to save $30.
Except they didn't research enough to find out there
were no fast food outlets nearby - only a Steak Shack
where they ended up spending $25 more than planned for
dinner. Plus, the continental breakfast didn't start
until 6am, long after they have left, so they grab a
bagel and $4 coffee at the airport. There went the
savings on a decent room!
Price is no object, so you pick a higher rated hotel
that has amenities you may or may not require. What you
really need is a good nights sleep because of an
important presentation to a valued client in the
morning. So you book the 3 or 4 star hotel for $200 and
pay another $15 to park your car, expecting a decent
night of rest.
Unfortunately, they didn't read
enough reviews to find out that if you face the airport
you will hear jet noise ALL NIGHT LONG. Or that this
particular hotel has an indoor pool on the 3rd floor
where people tend to yell and scream long into the
night. They then neglect to request a appropriate room
and after finding out they are in 310 (near the pool AND
facing the airport) they request to move only to be told
the hotel is full and can't move you. For HALF the price
(and free parking) they could have stayed at a mid-tier
hotel with no pool AWAY from the airport and slept like
a baby.
A
person examines four different motels on a discount
internet site, all meeting their budget requirements and
having the amenities they desire. They read the limited
reviews and choose one based upon their budget and the
fact they have a pool and reserve it.
But they arrive at the airport and find out AFTER they
take airport transportation to the city that their
choice is still four miles away and they need to pay $22
each way for a cab. Plus, the hotel/motel is not
centrally located to any dining or shopping nearby so
another $15 (each way) is spent getting to a drugstore
or shopping district. To add insult to injury, the
'pool' is tiny and completely unappealing.
All of the above
could have been avoided by reading reviews either from
sources OTHER than the discount site or the hotel site
itself. Or by knowing what parts of review sites to
read, not just the reviews themselves. I'll show you
where to look and what to infer from comments by guests,
especially those who have an axe to grind or those who
mis-identified the property! |
Who Should Buy This Book?
Those who are tired of being
unpleasantly surprised when they arrive at a new hotel or
motel.
Anyone who rarely travels and is
insecure about the locations of motels or how to get there
by shuttle.
Those who know where they want to go but
want to make sure conditions haven't changed, like
re-modeling currently underway or a change in
the continental breakfast or the fact the pool is under
repair.
